Boost Your Impact With Tax-Efficient Giving*
We’re grateful for your support—and want you to know about a few smart giving strategies that could help you make an even bigger difference while also saving on taxes.
*Please consult your attorney, CPA or financial advisor to determine the tax deductions that apply in your case. The ACL does not offer tax advice. Questions? Our financial advisor is happy to help.
Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)
You’ll receive an immediate tax deduction when you contribute to your DAF, and you can distribute gifts over time to qualifying non-profits. The ACL information you can provide to your DAF administrator when making your grant recommendation is listed below.
“Supporting critical Boulder County non-profits from our DAF lets us contribute more in one year and give contributions over many years.” – Kim D.
Transferring securities
Transferring securities (e.g. stocks, bonds, etc.) to ACL is a great way to make a win-win gift.
When you donate publicly traded stocks that have increased in value and that you have owned for more than one year you may avoid capital gains taxes. You may take the full fair market value of the gift on the date it is transferred, rather than the amount you originally paid for it as a charitable deduction on your income taxes.
If you sell depreciated stocks or bonds and donate the proceeds you may be able to take a charitable deduction for the full value of the gift and take the capital loss on the asset.
Give Tax-Free from Your IRA
If you're 70 1/2 or older, you can make a tax-free charitable contribution from your Traditional IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), allowing you to donate up to $108,000 (or $216,000 for married couples) annually (2025 amounts), excluding the amount from your taxable income. You will want your distributions from your IRA to your charity(ies) to arrive before the December 31 deadline for the current tax year. These distributions can also count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and reduce your taxable income. We are happy to work with you and your advisor to help facilitate your gift.
Leave a Legacy Gift
You can create a lasting impact by naming our organization as a beneficiary in your estate plan. This can be done through your will, trust, retirement account, life insurance policy, or other financial accounts. Legacy gifts cost nothing today and allow you to support our mission well into the future. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after other obligations are met. Be sure to use our full legal name and EIN when setting up your beneficiary designation.
