Tropic Thunder, the Nightmare from DreamWorks It is a new movie that has very offensive language regarding people with cognitive disabilities. It is intended as a satire and comedy. It does harm to a specific group of people and their families. It affirms in our culture that unkind comments about a person with a cognitive disability are acceptable. We don’t agree. It is 2008. We cannot tolerate the bigotry. If you don’t agree with them, you may want to do some of the following: Boycott the movie. And tell your friends and associate to stay away too. Write an email to DreamWorks, the producers and tell them of the pain they cause in their new comedy movie. Contact Stacey Snider, the CEO. The DreamWorks website is www.DreamWorks.com Write a letter to the editor of your local paper, expressing your frustration and worries that are caused by the terrible language used in the movie. This is an opportunity to stress the positive experiences in the lives of people with developmental disabilities, in spite of the cruel comments of some movie producers. Stress that you don’t want to call attention to the movie, but rather to the bigoted language that DreamWorks has released in the movie. You may want to suggest that people avoid going to see it if they don’t want to support the bigotry of the remarks in the movie. This movie is about making money. The response to our anger is to say that it was only intended as a satire. As a result, they want to make money with the “satire”. In this case, on the backs of people with cognitive disabilities.
